Nanette
Perrotte
I dance in the note. I sweep and pirouette between melodic waves
that flow from
my mouth. Where does the note begin and end? Where do I fit in? Are we both
one and the same?
I think so. Our voice is a mirror of our body and essence, the soul amplified.
I feel that connection strongly with my work in voice, dance, meditation
and Yoga.
My dance with voice started in my youth, blossomed in my teens, tortured
it’s way
through the late 20’s and now arrives at a steady deep flow as I enter
my 40’s.
My first rock band G.I.R.L (Get it Real Loud) when I was twelve, was my
bra-burning-moment. I loved the show tunes and Art songs that my voice teachers
taught
me, but I needed to rock.
Feeling that grip on the microphone, my voice
over
screaming guitars and drums as I flung my young body around the stage was
something that made me bold.
This feeling and image is so vivid for me. It’s that powerful fun
that only comes
when you are in the world of creativity. That feeling is what I try to convey
and
encourage in my students.
Studying voice is not only about the vocal chords,
it’s
a study of self and your potential for power, grace and greatness.
From my parents, I learned that one of life’s great joys is being
in love with music,
art, literature, dance, people and life. Berklee College of Music was where
that
love was channeled, nurtured and directed. Today with my work in the Nanette
Perrotte Combo and Emily Dickinson Rock, my love affair with singing happens
over and over again. It is a familiar love, yet new each time.
